Small Illicit Weapons

Delegates Debate Measures to Curb Illicit Small Arms

Delegates in the Spanish General Assembly committee debated on Saturday how small arms continue to fall into the hands of unauthorized individuals, emphasizing the life-altering consequences that can occur within seconds as a result

Urgency and Impact

Representatives warned that inaction effectively enables the problem, stressing the urgency of strengthening safeguards to prevent weapons from being acquired by those without permits or with harmful intent.

Legal Frameworks

Several delegations highlighted existing legal frameworks that impose penalties of at least 10 years in prison for civilians found in possession of illegal firearms or who misuse them. However, speakers noted that enforcement and prevention remain ongoing challenges

International Support

Many countries expressed strong support for pursuing solutions, often citing their own national experiences with gun-related violence as a driving factor behind their positions

Delegations from countries less directly affected by the issue suggested they could contribute through financial assistance or by providing resources to nations facing higher levels of illicit arms circulation.
