The Economic and Financial Committee (ECOFIN) debates over the UN’s role in aiding developing countries gain access to new technology. With education and financing funds as the goal, ECOFIN participants create resolutions, which pledge to aid the development of under-represented countries.
There are currently resolutions in progress of being discussed and voted on, including a resolution led by South Korea, and sponsors including: Uzbekistan, Kuwait, Portugal, and Russia. The resolution, titled 1-1, creates a bank charter similar to the World Bank. This charter takes private investments and funds educational and technological improvement in all regions of developing countries. As education levels improve in countries that receive financial investments, the economy will experience a positive change, especially as more people are able to gain higher education, developing human resources in said countries. The main incentive for these large scale loans is the profit of gaining access to a new exportation location, promoting trade. A member of this resolution, Kosovo, views this exchange as highly beneficial. The gain of an economic partner and technology all at once, proves the effectiveness of this resolution.
The other main resolution is led by Uganda, Uruguay, Niger, Japan, and the Lebanese Republic. This resolution focuses solely upon the educational aspect of development. As Uganda mentions, the development of human resources is the most important thing for a country, both economically and progressively. The resolution aims to create a higher access to education by providing international cooperation in creating a data platform of information to aid in education practices. The resolution’s other goal is creating nongovernmental and international organizations that will provide developing countries with access to teachers and learning materials.
According to each resolution presented, it is easy to see that the ECOFIN committee as a whole agrees that providing educational and financial aid to requesting countries is imperative. As debate goes on, an increase in educational and economic prosperity worldwide is looking to be accomplished.
